Five Health Benefits of Artichokes

Who would have thought this strange-looking flower that’s eaten as a vegetable is also packed with so many health benefits? Yes, artichokes may seem inedible and harmful, but it’s actually beneficial.

Artichokes have been known since ancient times to cure a number of illnesses that affects the human race. It’s because this thistle is an excellent source of fiber and dietary magnesium, Vitamins C and A, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, potassium among other nutrients.
Thus, it helps alleviate nasty symptoms of illnesses or even cure a number of diseases.

1. Diabetes

The artichoke is rich in carbohydrates. However, the type found in artichokes (polysaccharide or starch) is handled by the body differently because it’s in the form of insulin. And as we all know, insulin helps stabilize the blood sugar level of those people affected by diabetes.

Make sure though, that the artichoke you buy is fresh. As the artichoke ages, it converts the insulin into other types of sugar and would no longer be beneficial for diabetics.

2. Relieves Dyspepsia Symptoms

If you have ever suffered heartburn and belching attacks, felt bloated and sick to your stomach after eating a spicy meal, you might be suffering from dyspepsia – or what we commonly know as indigestion.

But with artichokes just around, you do not have to go through such torture.
Studies proved that people suffering from indigestion have shown significant improvement after being treated with artichoke leaf extracts.

Artichokes is said to have properties that stimulates and aids the flow or secretion of bile from the gallbladder.

3. Lowers Bad Cholesterol Levels

There are two main reasons why artichokes help lower the LDL in the body: cynarin and luteolinis.

These two compounds, found in highest concentration in the artichoke leaves, significantly reduced the bad cholesterol levels in the body. And because artichokes promote bile secretion in the liver, it also in effect, decreased the manufacturing of cholesterol in the liver.

4. Relieves Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms

Researchers found that extracts of artichoke leaves can relieve the symptoms of patients suffering from gas, cramping, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and/or constipation due to irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a functional disorder that can affects the colon or part of the digestive tract that stores stool and currently has no cure.

Compounds from the head, leaves and stems of the artichoke confirmed 96 percent of IBS sufferers provide better relief compared to other IBS therapies. Participants of the test also reported they experienced more normal bowel patterns.

5. Cures Hangover

It happens once in a while – or even often for some – when we have more drinks that we can handle. The result: increased urination, dry mouth, headache, nausea and fatigue caused by dehydration, Vitamin B12 deficiency and hypoglycemia.

Or simply put, hangover.

Too much alcohol creates havoc in the body. It affects the stomach lining which results to nausea, impairs the ability of the liver to supply glucose to the tissues which results to fatigue and moodiness among so many other nasty symptoms.

Research revealed that taking artichoke extracts – which has Vitamin B12 — five hours before drinking alcohol may reduce nausea, moodiness and dry mouth.

However, there is clinically no known mechanism that can make you sober after a bout of excessive drinking except to patiently wait for your body flush the alcohol out of your system.

Since insulin in reality is a hormone secreted by the pancreas.Did you mean that this carbohydrate has a low glucose index due the kid a of its nature ( a complex one).
